The ups and downs of audiobooks.

As many of you know, I’ve been working for the last year on completing self-publishing on the some of my books for audio. This has been while also writing and publishing six other pieces of fiction. Confession time: I hate producing my own audiobooks. I don’t hate audiobooks! Though they’re not my favorite format for reading fiction, I absolutely love listening to non-fiction, especially for memoir and comedy, and I’ve slowly crept into appreciating short fiction in audio format. My son adores audiobooks and has a ton of them on his iPod in lots of genres, but mostly sci-fi and fantasy. And he’s the one that really got me started on appreciating the format. In fact, I have some audiobook recs here. But producing my own books? Nope. Hate it. Absolutely hate it. ALL of this has to do with me being the author of the thing being produced. Several things […]

Book Recommendaitons: Audiobook Recommendations

Audiobook Recommendations I’m kind of weird about audiobooks. I’m just going to get that right out of the way up front. I was slow to pick them up at all until I discovered my kid (my own child!) was a reluctant reader. Then I discovered a few years ago that my son loved audiobooks and couldn’t get enough of them, so we started listening to them on car trips. I’m the super-strict No-TV-In-The-Car-Look-Out-The-Windows-For-Heavens-Sake mom, so audiobooks were a great compromise for us. We got the benefit of listening to great stories and my son got hooked on the written word in audiobook format. So… audiobooks started creeping in. First kids books, then some non-fiction (mostly memoirs and such) from authors or comedians I love. And then I found some radio dramas. And slowly but surely, fiction has started to come to life through listening. My own work is still […]

Shadows and Gold Audiobook by Elizabeth Hunter

Audiobooks? What audiobooks?

Good morning, lovely people! I hope your week is going well. Because I get questions about audiobooks all the time, I’m going to address some of the most common questions in this post. Why are your new audiobooks taking so long? Well, for some reason, my previous audio publisher decided they didn’t want to pick up the newer books in my series. Not sure why as sales have been good, but there you go. Now, in the past, that would have meant reader/listeners were just out of luck. But happily, we don’t live in that time. The good news? I can produce my audiobooks myself! The bad news? I have to produce my audiobooks myself. Why is that bad news? Well, producing takes time. It takes time to cast the right voices, go through production notes, listen to files, edit files, etc. That used to be something my audio publisher […]

HARVEY FUNDRAISER: Please donate if you can.

I’m not shy about my Houston love. I went to university there and if all my family hadn’t still been in California, I’d have stayed. My first book is set there. I was just back in March for an alumni event. I have amazing friends and readers all over that part of Texas, so obviously, I’ve been glued to the news since Saturday. Online fundraisers have their place, but right now there are organizations on the ground in Houston who are working and need money. That’s why I’m doing a raffle for a bunch of signed books over on my Facebook author page. Currently, my readers have raised over a thousand dollars for four local charities I’ve designated: ●Houston Food Bank ( ●Coalition for the Homeless ( ●Texas Diaper Bank ( ●Houston SPCA ( All readers have to do to enter the raffle is donate $10 to one of those local […]
